Integrated Social Media: A Vital Key!
One of the key factors contributing to the success of some major bloggers (on what we might call the A-List) is that they have successfully integrated social media into their promotional activity. In this post, we’ll take a quick look at one A-Lister’s Twitter following and consider how we can do the same.
One of the things I need to do in 2013 to achieve my goal is to get a lot more targeted twitter followers. Recently, my following has been growing at an increasing rate. For a long time last year, my following was about 280 people. But quite recently, it has increased to 318 – that’s today’s figure.
For once, I can say with reasonable certainty what has caused those additional people to engage with me and I’ll tell you what has changed in just a minute. What I wanted to say first was that I was not really using Twitter properly at all. I had (and still have) my Twitter account integrated with my two main blogs so that when I post, my Tweet stream gets updated automatically. So I had, to some extent, integrated social media into my marketing mix but that was all I was doing … until fairly recently.
Before you even think it, let me tell you that I did not buy Twitter followers. That is a marketing strategy that is doomed to failure. Buying followers may get your numbers looking good, but it really won’t do much else for you – so don’t be tempted to go there; it’s just a waste of your time and money.
Now, I know we are not talking about a mega increase here, but nevertheless, I can say that the additional 40-or-so people followed me simply because I have been active on Twitter. All I have done is Tweet and Retweet other bloggers’ stuff when I found it to be interesting and that one little activity appears to have made the difference.
So, social mentions are definitely on the increase for me. Now, just take a look at what that could mean …

At the moment, I may not have the targeted twitter followers that I need, but other bloggers certainly already do. As you can see, even with a small Twitter following (like me) you can still get your message out on social media by leveraging the success of others. This is what I really need to do in order to achieve my goal.
As you can clearly see from the above, when other bloggers ReTweet one of my messages, I get a chance to attract the attention of their followers and just look at how potentially influential some of those good people are!
For the sake of comparison, let’s take a look at the person I currently consider to be the top personal development blogger; this is the niche for my main site. His name is Steve Pavlina, his site is a similar age to mine. Personally, I think I write at least as well as Steve (I know I am a bit biased here). But, without doubt, Steve has been much more successful than me when it comes to marketing his blog.
Take a look at how effectively Steve has integrated social media into his marketing …

(The above stats were produced using Twittergrader, one of the useful free Twitter tools I am trying out at the moment.)
Now that’s the kind of difference we are talking about here!!! <– It is quite rare for me to use the exclamation mark and in this case, I think all three are warranted.
To achieve my goal, that’s the kind of impact I also need to create because next year (actually, it’s this year now -2013) I intend the personal development niche to have a much stronger challenger in the form of the White Dove Books site and the Inspiration Blog. It is fair to say that I have already integrated social media into my marketing, but this year, this is going to be a strong focus area for me. It is how I am planning to compete.
So you see, I am going to get very serious with Twitter marketing (if that’s what it’s called) this year. I know that increasing my social marketing activity much, much further will help me to achieve my goal. By the way, if you are not sure why you need a large group of targeted twitter followers in order to become successful online, see my article Google’s Infinite Search Space Revealed.
Oh, yes, one last thing: if you enjoyed this article, please consider giving it a quick Tweet – you know it makes sense …

Hi Will,
I read with interest this post about Twitter and the potential marketing benefits that it has.
In a previous post you mention the use of Retweet. Are you still using this software? Just wondered if it has contributed to the increase of your Twitter followers.
I look forward to hearing back from you in due course.

Hi Peter
Thanks for your comment. I am indeed still using Just Retweet. However, it is not software, it is an online service. I like it because it gives me a way of connecting with other bloggers. I can visit their blogs and leave comments and be a part of the online discussion around my areas of interest. That on top of the social benefits of the site.
